UNDER CONSTRUCTION. MORE INFORMATION COMING SOON

In Valley Stream, NY, your property taxes primarily contribute to funding local government services, with school taxes making up a significant portion.

At Valley Stream 30, we want you to be informed about what your tax dollars support. This page is dedicated to providing you with information about your taxes and how they affect you as a community member.

If you would like to know more about your tax bill, please contact the
Business Office at 516-434-3616.

Here's a breakdown of how your tax dollars are utilized and the factors that influence their allocation:

  • The Town of Hempstead and Valley Stream provide many local government services, excluding public education and police protection, and comprise a portion of your property tax dollars.

  • School taxes, collected by the Receiver of Taxes, are forwarded directly to your local school district and used to fund the operation of public schools. In Valley Stream, your school taxes support initiatives like providing technology devices to students, maintaining school facilities, and funding academic and extracurricular programs.

  • You may also be supporting other village services like sanitation, volunteer fire services, and park amenities through your property taxes.

What determines community information and how tax dollars are used

  • Your property's assessed value, determined by Nassau County, affects your tax bill. Property tax exemptions, such as the STAR exemption, can reduce the taxable assessed value and therefore lower your tax liability.

  • Payments in Lieu of Taxes (PILOTs) are agreements between a business and an Industrial Development Agency (IDA) where a business pays a stabilized schedule of real estate taxes over a determined period, often to incentivize development or expansion. PILOT payments are distributed to tax jurisdictions similarly to standard tax payments and are often a net increase in revenue for the municipality compared to what a straight tax payment would have been for an underdeveloped property.

  • School district budgets, decided by the local Board of Education, significantly influence the school tax portion of your bill. These budgets involve balancing revenue and expenditures, considering existing and new programs, meeting contract obligations, and planning for the future.

  • New York State laws establish a "property tax cap," which limits the growth in the property tax levy, with some exceptions.

  • Local government budgets, developed and adopted by the respective taxing jurisdictions, determine the amount of revenue needed from property taxes. They subtract revenues from other sources (like state aid and sales tax) from the total budget to determine the tax levy
