Sixth graders in Mrs. Van Keuren’s class at Shaw Avenue School in Valley Stream District 30 are currently immersed in their study of Ancient Egypt.

On Dec. 12, students learned about the papyrus plant and how the Ancient Egyptians used it to create papyrus paper. As a culminating activity, students also crafted their own papyrus paper. When their papyrus paper fully dries, students will pretend to be Ancient Egyptian scribes and write their names in hieroglyphics on the paper, which will be accompanied by the Ancient Egyptian god or goddess that they choose to research.

Shaw Avenue Elementary School’s sixth grade Student Advocates in Valley Stream District 30 held a Thanksgiving food drive to support people in need from Nov. 18-22.

During the food drive, which was held during American Education Week, students collected nonperishable food items for people throughout the school community. In previous years, the drive was coordinated by Shaw Avenue’s teachers. However, teachers agreed to allow students to run this year’s drive to promote student leadership. The Student Advocates also designed posters which were on display throughout the building to spread awareness for the food drive. All donations will go to the Blessed Sacrament Church’s food pantry to be distributed to community members in need.

The district commends Shaw Avenue’s Student Advocates for organizing this year’s Thanksgiving food drive.

On Oct. 28, 18 students in Valley Stream District 30 were sworn into the Global Leaders of Tomorrow Advisory Council during the board of education business meeting at Shaw Avenue Elementary School.

They promised to unlock their potential to become a Global Leader of Tomorrow, activate their self-determination and advocacy for themselves and others, become confident and courageous human beings, and navigate multiple pathways for future success.

The Global Leaders of Tomorrow Advisory Council will meet regularly with Superintendent of Schools Dr. Roxanne Garcia-France to discuss how they can accomplish their goals and encourage other students in their respective schools to help in their efforts. This year, the advisory council will focus on the United Nations’ goal of wellness with the question, “What does wellness mean to you?”

“I am so excited because they help me to be a better leader,” Dr. Garcia-France said. “This is an opportunity for my Global Leaders of Tomorrow to get that experience, to know that it’s a great honor to serve not only your school, but your community. The real payment is when you serve and do good for others. That’s what it’s all about.”

The district commends this year’s council members on this amazing achievement.
