5/8/23 -TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD & VILLAGE OF VALLEY STREAM: VAPE & SMOKE SHOP UPDATE
On March 30th, I informed the community that I sent a letter to the Town of Hempstead & the Village of Valley Stream about the district's concern that a smoke/vape shop is set to open at 521 W Merrick Road, Valley Stream, New York 11580. The operation of a smoke/vape shop at this location appears to be in violation of Town of Hempstead Code § 121-3(e), prohibiting the retail sale of vaping or e-cigarette products within 1,000 linear feet of any school, park, or playground. In addition, the Shaw Avenue PTA and other Community members took immediate action by collecting signatures for a petition to revoke the permit for the Vape & Smoke Shop. Since then, the district has received the following responses about this matter:
The Board of Education will meet with their counsel and discuss next steps in regards to this serious matter. and will continue to keep our staff, parents/guardians, and community updated on this matter. As I shared in my letter,
"We cannot stand by silently in the face of this clear danger to the health and safety of our students. We request you take immediate action to stop the continued operation of any smoke/vape shop in violation of the law or which would endanger the health, safety, and welfare of our students due to its close proximity to one of our schools."
