An Introduction to the String Program

District 30 students have the opportunity to begin a string Instrument in the fourth grade. The District offers lessons on the violin, viola, cello, and bass. The 30-minute lessons are given once a week. The lessons are group lessons. District 30 provides instruments to students free of charge. We ask three things in return: 1- that your child practices at home; 2- that your child comes to lessons prepared with their instrument and book; 3- that your child be a member of our performing ensembles at the appropriate time.

Our recruitment program begins in the spring of third grade. All the instruments taught in the district are demonstrated for the children. They are then given a Recruitment Packet that includes an enrollment form. We ask that the children provide a first, second, and third choice of instruments.

The beginning lessons focus on correct playing position, playing familiar songs, and learning to read music. Our first year players get a chance to show their progress at a concert in June.

Students in their second and third years of playing are advancing their note reading skills, learning about music history, and music theory. These students are now working together in orchestra rehearsals. The school orchestra presents concerts twice a year. Orchestra rehearsals are held, once a week, before school (7:30 AM ­ 8:20 AM) and are part of the music program.

Learning a musical instrument is a wonderful opportunity for students. However, it is essential that you and your child realize that there is work involved in being successful. Students will be given weekly assignments, are expected to practice daily, and keep a daily practice log. This helps the child and parent know what needs to be worked on, and it helps the teacher know how much effort the child (and parent) is focusing on the instrument.
