School librarians Jacqueline Capewell, On Kyung Joo and Carolyn Kaiser attended the Long Island School Library Systems’ 6th Regional Institute on Nov. 5. The day of learning, sponsored by Nassau and Eastern/Western Suffolk BOCES School Library Systems, brought school librarians together from across Long Island.

Capewell, librarian at Shaw Avenue School; Joo, librarian at Forest Road School; and Kaiser, librarian at Clear Stream Avenue School first heard from keynote speaker Dr. Barbara Stripling, former professor and president of the American Library Association; a relentless advocate for the importance of school libraries. Dr. Stripling shared and explained the Empire State Information Fluency Continuum (ESIFC), a 500-page document that guides school librarians in teaching students to learn and utilize information skills. The ESIFC sets learning goals and prepares students to develop 21st-century skills continuously as they grow and succeed in their academic and personal lives.

During the second session, the District 30 librarians met Cheryl Wills, author of the book “Emma” and wife of Clear Stream Avenue Principal John Singleton.

“We were excited to hear Cheryl Wills share the legacy of her great, great, great grandmother Emma Wills, a former slave,” said Kaiser. “We took inscribed copies of the book back to our schools, so that our students can read the book and be inspired to give a voice to their own ancestors; especially those forgotten by our collective history.”

In the afternoon session, Capewell, Joo and Kaiser attended sessions regarding stress management for librarians, various online resources and creating compelling questions for inquiry and poetry. They look forward to bringing the engaging lessons, materials and knowledge into each of their school buildings.
