Valley Stream Mayor Ed Fare visited Shaw Avenue Elementary School in late September, where he read to first-grade classes in the school’s library.

Mayor Fare read students the book “How to Heal a Broken Wing” by Bob Graham. Graham tells the simple story of a boy who finds a fallen bird and nurses it back to health. It is a story about love, care and hope. Mayor Fare expressed the importance of these characteristics with students, emphasizing that they should be kind, charitable and supportive toward one another.

First graders all received water bottles, courtesy of the mayor’s office. Each bottle included a pencil, eraser and crayons. The mayor encouraged students to remain positive and supportive of one another, and wished them much success during their new school year.
