Valley Stream District 30 is proud to announce that Shaw Avenue Elementary School has been named a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. Shaw Avenue is one of only 286 schools throughout the country and one of only 18 schools in New York State to be granted this designation this year. The award is based on the school’s overall academic excellence or progress in improving student academic achievement.

In the official announcement made by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan on September 24th, he stated, “National Blue Ribbon Schools represent examples of educational excellence, and their work reflects the belief that every child in America deserves a world-class education.” Being named a National Blue Ribbon School becomes a mark of excellence in education recognized by everyone from parents to policymakers in thousands of communities, as noted by the U.S. Department of Education.

Of the designation, Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Nicholas A. Stirling said, “This is an honor that the entire staff, past and current, should be very proud of achieving. The high expectations, comprehensive curriculum and strong partnership between our Board, educational staff and parents/community have made this possible.”

Shaw Avenue Elementary School Principal Amy Pernick added, “Being recognized as a Blue Ribbon School is an acknowledgement that this school community has worked together in search of a common goal – that is, to provide the best education possible for its students regardless of the challenges that stand in its way. While this award recognizes one year in particular, the accomplishment is due to a continuous effort over the years by our students and staff. I am proud and honored to have been a part of this team.”

This outstanding recognition is just the latest in achievements for Valley Stream District 30. All three elementary schools in the District were recognized as Reward Schools by New York State, signifying that these schools have made the most progress or have the highest performance with no significant gaps in student achievement.

Board of Education President Carolyn Torres said, “We continue to set high goals for our students and staff to ensure that every child is provided with the programs and services needed to succeed. The Blue Ribbon designation is a testament to the ongoing collaboration that takes place on a daily basis in our District. It is an outstanding achievement and, on behalf of the Board of Education, I extend my congratulations to the entire Shaw Avenue community on this honor.”
