Shaw Avenue Elementary School sixth-grader Rohan Baig was recently crowned the winner of his school’s final Scripps National Spelling Bee. Rohan will continue onto the Long Island Finals at Hofstra University in Feb. 2018, where he will compete against students throughout the region.

The spelling bee took place in the school’s library where families and second place classroom winners were invited to attend. Fifteen fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-graders who won first place in their classroom competition participated in the school’s finals. Surpassing their grade-level spelling words, the students put their spelling skills to the test. It was the first year that the school used words from an eighth grade list provided by the Scripps National Spelling Bee website. The competition ended when Baig successfully spelled the word “endeavor.”
