It was an engaging day of professional development for district administrators and staff during Superintendent’s Conference Day on Nov. 7. Held at Shaw Avenue Elementary School, educators from Clear Stream Avenue, Forest Road and Shaw Avenue schools gathered for a variety of workshops throughout the day to expand their lessons and techniques inside the classrooms.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Nicholas Stirling opened the day to speak about how the school year is progressing and thanking staff and administrators for their hard work and dedication thus far.

“As you participate in all of the various workshops that have been planned, I ask you to focus on how your learning today will be shared or how you will implement it into your classrooms,” he said. “This is a year where we are focusing on core instruction and we need to continue to do that.”

The day was structured around the Ed Camp model, which Shaw Avenue School Principal Alejandro Rivera discussed before the staff went off to their workshops. This was the first time that the district would be implementing the Ed Camp model into their professional development. Ed Camp is an “unconference” way for participants to learn. It is fully participant-driven, from the session topics to the facilitators. It also allows participants to move to a new session to meet their needs at any time.

“It’s all about starting a conversation,” said Rivera. “The idea is that you can bring your learning back to you and your colleagues and really spark those conversations as we move forward throughout the coming days, weeks and months.”

Throughout the day, eight to nine hour long sessions were presented. Topics included “Flipping the Classroom,” “eSpark,” “G Suite Basics,” “Technology and Theater Thursdays” and more. Many of the sessions aimed at enhancing the district’s “Show Your Character” theme inside the classrooms. Administrators, teachers and outside speakers facilitated the sessions and guided the conversations.

Ending the day on a positive note, the attendees assembled back into the school’s auditorium to reflect on what they learned throughout the day. They also had the opportunity to receive prizes courtesy of eSpark Learning, Imagine Learning and eSchool Data.
