Fifth and sixth-grade students at Clear Stream Avenue Elementary School recently took to the trees at Adventure Park at Long Island. The trip was part of the district’s “Let’s Move” initiative. Students moved through a series of platforms in the trees connected by cable, wood, rope and zip lines to form bridges. Each bridge presented a different challenge of how to get to the next platform.

Students were safe at all times using the park’s double-connected, “always-locked-on,” climbing system. The students learned how to negotiate each challenge through trial and error, critical thinking and physical strength. At the conclusion of the trip, students were asked to reflect on how the experience prepared them academically for the challenges of the school year. Students posted their reflections on Google slides and through essays. The lesson of overcoming challenges was a wonderful way to start the year.
