Throughout the month of May, Shaw Avenue Elementary School students raised awareness about several different charities through fun and educational events.

To start off the week, the school held Blue or Orange Day for the PACER Center, an organization that provides support and advocacy to families of children with disabilities. Students and faculty wore blue and/or orange to raise awareness about bullying prevention.

The week continued with Team Up Against Cancer Day in support of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Students and faculty showed off their team spirit by wearing their favorite sports apparel.

The school also raised awareness for All Hands Raised, an organization that seeks to align “the community’s efforts to make positive change for children, youth and young adults.” To celebrate this day, students wore college apparel or clothing that depicted the career they aspire to when they grow older.

Later in the week, students were “Wild About Animals” as they dressed up as their favorite animal or wore animal prints to draw awareness to North Shore Animal League America, the world’s largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization. To conclude the week, students and faculty expressed themselves for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, wearing whatever they wanted to show who they really are.

After the week concluded, students, faculty and staff were given the opportunity to donate to one of the charities that they had learned about during the week.
