Students at Shaw Avenue Elementary School in Valley Stream District 30 celebrated Diwali, the Hindu holiday known as the Festival of Lights, on Nov. 4. Several classes learned about the traditions of the holiday, which is celebrated by many Shaw Avenue families.

Students in Amanda Critelli and Debra Iadevio’s second grade class read “5 Days of Diwali” by Ajanta and Vivek, which tells the significance of the holiday and why it is celebrated. Those who observe Diwali shared some of their special family traditions with their classmates, and students had the opportunity to create their own celebratory artwork. s

Fourth graders in Sarah Van Keuren’s class also celebrated the first day of Diwali. Students learned from their classmates about the symbolic Diya lamps and how they signify goodness. As a class, each created their own Diyas while listening to music performed by the Gemmini Band — which included musical parts by Shaw alumni, including Mrs. Karrim’s daughters.
