For the second consecutive year, sixth-grade students throughout Valley Stream District 30 gathered outside Shaw Avenue School for Unity Day on May 23. The event encouraged students from Clear Stream Avenue, Forest Road and Shaw Avenue schools to connect through engaging teambuilding activities.

Unity Day was established last school year as the district celebrated their theme, “Let’s Move.” Physical education teachers from all three buildings collaborated to form a day of unity that sixth-graders throughout the district could enjoy together. Dressed in white t-shirts with different colored numbers on them, students were assigned to teams of students representing all three schools. Together, they participated in activities such as tug-of-war, a scooter relay, a basketball shootout, a sponge relay, a hula hoop game called “You Make It, You Take It” and more.

Students had the opportunity to make new friends through the variety of hands-on activities. Shaw Avenue sixth-grader Emma Mazzeo enjoyed seeing students from Clear Stream who went to her summer camp, while Clear Stream sixth-grader Drake Rodriguez liked having the opportunity to show off his competition skills and make new friends along the way.

“I like how everyone is being helpful and showing great sportsmanship,” said Forest Road sixth-grader Josh Hermida. “It’s pretty cool to be working with kids from other schools.”
