The Board of Education gathered on Aug. 26 for its monthly regular meeting. Director of Facilities and Operations Christopher Malone presented a facilities update to the Board and community. He highlighted all of the summer projects and current projects.

Among the many updates, 17 new doors were installed at Forest Road School, repointing took place throughout the district, the nurses’ room at Forest Road School was updated and a new slide was installed on the Clear Stream Avenue playground. Mr. Malone also noted that the district’s Energy Performance Contract is underway and spoke about the construction progress of the Shaw Avenue School addition. The addition will include four new classrooms and storage rooms. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Nicholas Stirling thanked Mr. Malone and the entire maintenance and custodial crew for their hard work during the year and the summer.

Following the facilities presentation, Dr. Stirling spoke about the district’s strategic plan. This school year will be the fifth and final year of the current strategic plan. He reported that the district will be developing a new strategic plan for the 2021-2026 school years. Meetings with the Board of Education will be established and the district anticipates forming a Strategic Plan Committee which will consist of Board members, administrators, teachers and parents. Community surveys will be utilized like in the past, and updates will be provided throughout the year on the progress of the new plan. A completed plan is expected in June 2020.

“This is the year of strategic planning,” Dr. Stirling said. “We look forward to the process and I really believe in the process. It provides us with a true guideline of where we would like to see the district go, and I think we’ve done very well over the last 10 years.”
