First-grader Aidan Fretel and fifth-grader Rachelle Griffith from Forest Road Elementary School were recently selected as New York State PTA Award of Merit winners for their entries in the 2017-2018 National PTA Reflections contest, “Within Reach.” Fretel was recognized for film production in the primary division, while Griffith was honored for her dance choreography in the intermediate division for the second consecutive year.

PTA Reflections is a national program that sparks students’ imagination, curiosity and participation in the arts. Each year, students are asked to reflect on a specific theme and create an original piece of work in the category of dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography or visual arts.

The students are two out of only 108 NYS PTA Award of Merit winners. Both entries were among 420 of the best statewide to reach the NYS PTA level of Reflections judging. Fretel created his film with the iMovie app where he used his toys and imagination to produce his story, “Winning is Within Reach.” Griffith created her own choreography titled “My Gift if You,” which was dedicated to her mother. She previously was presented with the NYS PTA Award of Merit for her dance choreography, “Coat of Many Colors,” in the intermediate division of the 2016-2017 National PTA Reflections Contest.

The students will have their work displayed in the Reflections Art Gallery at the 122nd NYS PTA Convention in Saratoga Springs from Nov. 9-11.
