To educate families on the variety of services that Valley Stream District 30 offers its students, the district will be hosting their annual “Taste of a Service” parent fair on March 5 from 6:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Shaw Avenue School.

Students and family members from Clear Stream, Forest Road and Shaw Avenue elementary schools, as well as incoming kindergarten families, are invited to speak with faculty members about the services offered to students to help set them up for success. Reading specialists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, classroom/physical education teachers, behavioral consultants, school nurses, school psychologists and enrichment specialists from throughout the district will be stationed in the gymnasium to discuss strategies used in the classroom and speak about what can be utilized at home to support their child’s learning. In addition, entertainment will be provided for students to enjoy and light refreshments will be served.

Forest Road Sixth-Graders Go Back in Time with Gaming Technology

Students with Minecraft Platform

Sixth-grade students in Christopher Onorato’s class recently participated in a unique media project for their unit in social studies on both the Neolithic and the Paleolithic Era (New and Old Stone Age).

The students used the Minecraft Gaming Platform to create their own digital world to depict the elements that make up the Neolithic time period. Students created their own farms, animal pens and shelters through the program.
Onorato was impressed with the level of creativity that the students showed.

“I was blown away by the ability some of them had to demonstrate their knowledge of the curriculum in such a unique way,” he said.

The Gift of Giving

Toys for Tots Donations and Forest Road Students
Students and staff at Forest Road School recently got into the holiday spirit by donating over 170 toys for the Forest Road PTA’s annual Toys for Tots drive. The drive started three years ago to support the local Marines Toys for Tots Foundation.

The foundation’s goal is to deliver a new toy at Christmas as a message of hope for less fortunate children in the community. New toys were collected over the course of a month for children ages 14 and under, including items such as books and electronics. The donations were placed in the school’s festively decorated lobby where toys lined the wall.

“It feels wonderful to have so many students and staff participating and giving back,” said Natalie Cange, PTA co-president. “We are very fortunate to be part of such a generous community.”
