During the district's recent board of education meeting, the board and community heard about the success of the district’s two summer programs. Summer School Coordinator Erica Suarez presented on the K-6 Summer Program, while Director of Special Services Dr. Nicole Schimpf presented on the Summer Special Education Extended School Year Program.

Both Ms. Suarez and Dr. Schimpf shared the academic and enrichment benefits of their respective programs and presented photos and videos of what students engaged in during the summer months. Ms. Suarez spotlighted the newest addition to the Summer Program which was the Tynker Coding Program for students entering fifth and sixth grade. Based on the results of a student survey that was distributed at the end of the program, 90% of the students reported that they enjoyed working with the Tynker program. Students also participated in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics activities, social emotional learning, music, English Language Arts and more.

Dr. Schimpf reported student growth and praised the staff for another great year of the Summer Special Education Extended School Year Program. Throughout the six-week program, students worked with special education teachers at Shaw Avenue School. They also visited Forest Road School to engage in hands-on science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics activities, strengthen their social and academic skills and more.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Nicholas Stirling and Board President Kenneth Cummings thanked Ms. Suarez, Dr. Schimpf and all the summer staff for making it a beneficial and enjoyable summer of learning for students.
