Second-graders Aidan Fretel and Sophia Griffith from Forest Road Elementary School were recently recognized two of the 107 Award of Merit winners in the 2018-2019 New York State PTA Reflections program, “Heroes Around Me.”

Aidan was one of five students selected in the state for the primary division of the film production category. His film, “Kindness Is A Superpower,” was created with iMovie. He was an Award of Merit winner last year as well in the Reflections program for his film which followed the 2017-2018 theme, “Within Reach.”

With a passion for dance, Sophia was one of five students selected in the state for the primary division of the dance choreography category. Her dance performance channeled the “Heroes Around Me” theme as she danced to the song “Imagine” by John Lennon.

Each year, students from grades K-12 across the state are encouraged to participate in the PTA Reflections program. The program sparks students’ imagination, curiosity and participation in the arts. Following a specific theme, students can create works of art in the following categories: dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts.

The NYS PTA will display Aidan and Sophia’s award-winning entries at the NYS PTA Celebration of the Arts this fall and the NYS PTA Reflections Art Gallery at the NYS PTA Convention in November.

The district congratulates both students on this tremendous achievement!
