Family members put themselves in the shoes of their students during the district’s second Friendly Family Tour of the 2018-19 school year on Oct. 23. Established this year by Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Roxanne Garcia France, the tours allow family members to visit Clear Stream Avenue, Forest Road and Shaw Avenue schools once a month to get a better understanding of the curriculum programs and tools that their students are utilizing in the classrooms on a daily basis.

The first Friendly Family Tour was held on Sept. 28. Families met members of the PTA, heard about the focus of the year and became familiar with the district’s social emotional learning initiatives. Family members have the opportunity to sign up for the tours each month which focus on different curriculum areas. Each school provides a tour on the same day, time and topic. The second tour featured a look at each school’s MakerSpace/Innovation Station and allowed them to engage with the educational tools. Families also had the opportunity to challenge themselves with team building activities found in the district’s Quest Program.

Central and building administrators have shown their support of the new initiative as they have participated in the activities with families, while staff members have played a major role assisting with the tours. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Nicholas Stirling expressed his gratitude to the families that attended Forest Road School’s tour on Oct. 23.

“It’s critical that the work that we do here is supported by our families and that families have a clear understanding of what it is that we are trying to do with our students,” he said. “We want to make sure that our students are prepared for the future…we thank you all for coming to get a bird’s eye view of what we are doing as it relates to 21st-century learning.”

The district will continue to move forward with the tours which have maintained successful turnouts thus far. The initiative is one of many that the district has implemented to continue fostering strong partnerships and relationships with families and the community as part of its five year strategic plan. The next Friendly Family Tour will be held on Nov. 13.
