Second-grade students throughout the district participated in engaging wellness workshops facilitated by members of the SCORE Club from the Valley Stream Central High School District on Dec. 18. The high schoolers visited Clear Stream Avenue, Forest Road and Shaw Avenue elementary schools throughout the day to educate the students on nutrition and healthy habits.

Under the guidance of advisors Britt Klein and Joanna Katz, the SCORE Club allows students to become more actively involved in school activities and community affairs. Throughout the day, second-graders received a presentation from the high school students and then worked in stations where they rotated and participated in activities that focused on eating healthy foods and exercising.

The program was part of the Inter-District Wellness Committee made up of representatives from each Valley Stream school district. Valley Stream District 30 and the Valley Stream Central High School District have collaborated for the past five years on bringing students together to enhance educational opportunities.

“The collaboration with the VSCHSD has made a huge impact with reinforcing social emotional and wellness skills for our elementary school students,” said Director of Special Services Nicole Schimpf. “The teachers appreciate the real life connection with the work they are doing in their classrooms as it relates to good nutrition and having the high school students serve as “role models” on how to eat healthy and have a balanced lifestyle. The high school students come well-prepared and wanting to help shape our youngster’s minds.”

Many high school students from the SCORE Club attended Valley Stream 30 schools as elementary students and enjoyed receiving the opportunity to return.

“It’s grown a lot and changed,” said former Clear Stream Avenue student and senior Vanessa Estrada. “It’s great to be back though. I have a lot of memories from here.”
