At the Valley Stream School District 30’s April 20 Board of Education Meeting, the Board and Administration formally recognized six students from Shaw Avenue School who represented the community with excellence at the third Annual NYC NBA Math Hoops Tournament. Athena Pajotte and Priya Mangal were lauded for their first-place win out of 40 teams from throughout the region, and Alex Durgadeen, Josiah Beltre, Emily Mota, and Diane Tomax received congratulatory comments and praise for their outstanding participation.

Held at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City on April 8, NBA Math Hoops presented a challenging way to explore math concepts through a fast-paced basketball board game. The program’s curriculum is tied to Common Core State Standards and 21st Century Learning Skills, and it has been shown to improve students’ basic math skills and understanding of statistics, in addition to their interpersonal skills, driving them to collaborate more effectively with their peers.

Shaw Avenue Principal Alejandro Rivera discussed the competition and introduced the students. “This is an opportunity to bring the things students are learning in school—particularly mathematics – together with sports,” he said. The group prepared under the direction of teacher Mr. Canle, who was with them during their victory and described the program in depth at the meeting. The students offered members of the Board an opportunity to view their trophies and expressed that they enjoyed the experience.
