Dancing with the stars of 5th grade

Dancing stars of Shaw Avenue School took the spotlight on March 8, when fifth-graders presented the culmination of the program, Dancing Classrooms: Transforming Lives One Step at a Time. Students showcased an assortment of choreography they learned from guest instructors during the course of 10 weeks.

The performance featured ballroom dances such as the merengue, foxtrot, tango, rumba, swing and waltz. Principal Alejandro Rivera and Assistant Principal Christopher Colarossi welcomed guests and praised the students for taking on this opportunity with enthusiasm. Dancing Classrooms of Long Island Educational Liaison Kathryn de Bruin introduced the program, and CoDanceCo, Inc. Teaching Artists Jessie Salvesen and Martin Rebello offered guidance to the dancers.

Before each dance, students read descriptions of the choreography, its meaning and its history. Demo teams of two pairs provided previews of the movements before their classes took the floor for full presentations.

Dancing Classrooms supports social emotional learning and relationship building, and also ties into the Valley Stream District 30’s Let’s Move initiative. In addition to learning a variety of new dances, fifth-graders developed confidence, teamwork skills and a greater awareness of cultural diversity.
