During the week of Feb. 13, Forest Road School in Valley Stream District 30 participated in a dance residency program with Kevin Rainey of the Phyllis Rose Dance Company. Students in grades 4-6 attended several workshops with the instructor, and had the opportunity to showcase their new dance skills in a special culminating performance.

Sixth-graders learned classic choreography with an African American influence including the Charleston, Lindy Hop and Swing, while fourth- and fifth-grade students practiced traditional African dances. Before and after the sessions, Rainey discussed the dances and shared stories from his own experiences as a professional dancer. The workshop combined the arts, physical activity and cultural enrichment.
