Students Explore Elements of Modern and Creative Dance

Fourth-grade students at Clear Stream Avenue Elementary School recently participated in an intensive dance residency from Alvin Ailey Arts In Education and Community Programs. The school was fortunate to have two very capable teachers who worked with the children to teach them elements of modern and creative dance.

Ms. Chantal Renée St. Gérard, choreographer, and Mr. Joseph Barnes, percussionist, instructed students in Lester Horton Dance techniques. The students were given one week to learn and prepare for a performance. Most of them had never been exposed to any form of dance. Many students were apprehensive prior to beginning this venture because they were unsure about how they would be perceived by their peers. However, Ms. Chantal and Mr. Barnes quickly gained their trust and gave them the tools and confidence needed to perform. "We are so very proud of our students for accepting the challenge of learning how to dance and express themselves through the gift of movement," said Principal John Singleton.

This experience proves that when given the exposure and the opportunity, our students can do GREAT things. The school would like to thank teachers Ms. Brennan and Mrs. Suarez, as well as Superintendent of Schools Dr. Stirling and the Board of Education for making this residency possible.
